From a two-minute nomination to national recognition here's every step of the journey.
The Highway Hero is a public recognition program open to anyone who witnesses a truck driver doing something worth celebrating. No freight scores. No performance reviews. Just human moments that deserve to be seen. The process is simple, transparent, and built around one idea: that the people driving America's roads have earned more recognition than they get.
It starts with a person, a member of the public, a shipper, a warehouse worker, another driver, who sees a truck driver do something that matters. Maybe they stop to help someone stranded on the road. Maybe they show patience and kindness in a difficult situation. Maybe they do something small that changes someone's day completely.
The nominator fills out our simple 8-step form. We ask for the driver's first name, a description of what they did, and basic contact details for verification. Optional fields like the driver's company or location help the review board but are never required. The whole process takes about five minutes.
Every submission is read by a real person on the The Highway Hero Review Board. The board checks that the story aligns with program values, removes anything off-topic or promotional, and edits for clarity or length where needed. Submissions that read like performance reviews, complaints, or freight disputes are not accepted.
At the end of each month, the board selects one standout story for Monthly Hero recognition. The selection is based on three criteria: the positive impact of the action, the authenticity of the story, and how well it represents professionalism and humanity in the trucking industry. Not all submissions are published, but every one is read.
Monthly Heroes are featured on the The Highway Hero website and announced across social media channels. The driver's story reaches a community of logistics professionals, fellow drivers, and members of the public who care about the people behind the wheel. Recognition that is long overdue, finally delivered.
From all Monthly Heroes across the year, the Review Board selects a single National Hero, the driver whose story best represents the spirit of the program. This is the program's highest honor: a recognition of extraordinary humanity on America's roads, shared with the widest possible audience.
A nomination must describe a specific positive action by a driver. If it reads like a performance review, a complaint, or a freight dispute, it will not be accepted. The board's decisions are final.
Every submission is handled by human reviewers who take the program's values seriously. Here's what happens after you hit submit.
Your submission lands in the review queue. Draft data is never stored on our servers after submission.
A board member reads the story, checks for alignment with program values, and flags any privacy concerns.
Stories may be lightly edited for clarity, length, or privacy. Identifying details may be limited when appropriate.
Standout stories are shortlisted for Monthly Hero. The driver is notified and may opt out before publication.
Two levels of recognition. Both earned. Neither bought.
One driver is selected every month from all qualified nominations. Monthly Heroes are featured on the website, announced on social media, and become eligible for National Hero consideration.
